ATELIER IMPARFAIT
How a Quebec furniture manufacturer turned a Squarespace catalog into a full transactional Shopify store — with custom configurators for made-to-order tables and stair components.

Imparfait l'Atelier Créatif is a Canadian manufacturer of custom solid wood tables, stair components, chairs, and decor. Everything is made to order by local artisans — each piece built to the customer's specifications in materials, dimensions, and finishes. They serve both homeowners directly and B2B accounts, with factory pickup or delivery across Quebec on a 30–60 business day production cycle.
When they came to us, the existing website was running on Squarespace. It functioned more like a digital catalog than an eCommerce site — customers could browse products but couldn't actually configure and purchase online. The buying process still required quote requests and back-and-forth with the sales team for every order.
Selling custom-made furniture online is fundamentally different from selling off-the-shelf products. A customer ordering a table needs to choose the model, the wood species, the dimensions, the finish, and the leg style — each combination affecting price, lead time, and production requirements. Stair components add another layer: customers need to specify measurements, materials, and configurations that have to work structurally, not just aesthetically.
The challenge was threefold: build a real transactional eCommerce experience for made-to-order products, create the brand identity to match the quality of the product, and unify online and in-store sales into a single system.
From digital catalog to full commerce — with custom configurators
We migrated Imparfait from Squarespace to Shopify and built a complete commerce experience around their made-to-order business model.
The centerpiece: step-by-step configuration tools that let customers design their own tables and stair components online — selecting dimensions, materials, finishes, and styles with real-time pricing that updates as they build. For stair components, the configurator guides customers through structural and aesthetic choices to produce a buildable specification, not just a wishlist.
We created a complete visual identity from scratch: minimalist design with strong, bold condensed typography paired with earthy tones that reflect the natural materials and the clean, architectural lines of their products. The design needed to feel premium without being precious — this is handcrafted furniture, not mass luxury.
We implemented Shopify POS to unify online and in-store into a single inventory and customer view. Full French and English support across the entire site. Mega-menus organized by collection and product type, quick checkout flow, and a UX built specifically for considered purchases — customers buying a $3,000+ custom table browse differently than someone buying a commodity product.
The configurator tools are what transformed the business from one that took orders to one that enables self-serve purchasing of complex custom products. That's the difference between a website and a sales channel.
"Most agencies would have treated this as a standard migration. But Imparfait's business doesn't work like a standard eCommerce store. Every product is made to order. Every customer is making a high-consideration purchase with dozens of configurable options."
