Shopify Plus vs OroCommerce for B2B eCommerce
OroCommerce was built for B2B when Shopify was still a T-shirt platform. RFQ, corporate accounts with roles, approval workflows, multi-website, a CRM bolted in — it's all there, and it's the reason it shows up on every mid-market shortlist.
Then Shopify shipped native B2B: companies, catalogs, price lists, net terms, draft orders. The question in 2026 isn't "which one has B2B features"; it's whether the deep-B2B extras Oro still leads on are worth an open-source stack you run, a licence with no public rate card, and a developer pool a fraction of Shopify's. Here's how we call it.

SCENARIOS · B2B-NATIVE STACK
When OroCommerce still makes sense
We build on Shopify Plus, and we still lose some of these evaluations on purpose. Oro earns the shortlist spot when the following is true:
- RFQ-driven selling is the business — most orders start as a quote with negotiation rounds and multi-level approval, and you need it in core, not in an app.
- Multi-org by design — you run multiple legal entities, websites, and brands from one back office with distinct pricing and workflow per org.
- One data model for CRM and commerce — you want them together and you're not on HubSpot or Salesforce.
- Data sovereignty or on-prem is a mandate — regulated industrial, defence, and some public-sector suppliers.
- You have, or will fund, a Symfony team — the platform is only as maintainable as the developers behind it.
SCENARIOS · MANAGED PLATFORM
When to choose Shopify Plus
- The 80/20 fits — 80% of your B2B fits native Shopify B2B and the other 20% is quotes, approvals, and spend control. That's exactly what B2B Protocol's 13 modules and the B2B Quote Engine cover, on a platform you don't operate.
- Weeks, not quarters — B2B Launch activates native B2B in 4–6 weeks for a fixed $20K CAD.
- Unified commerce — you sell D2C or through a showroom/POS as well as wholesale. Shopify does that natively; Oro is B2B-first.
- Talent — every Shopify agency in Montreal, Miami, or Paris can maintain it. Oro shops are rare.
- Predictable cost — a flat subscription instead of a quote-based licence plus implementation plus DevOps.
- Agentic readiness — Shopify's Catalog and agentic storefront work makes your products discoverable to AI buyers without a custom project.
REPLATFORMING
What an OroCommerce → Shopify Plus migration looks like
1. Roadmap — 4 weeks, $7,500 CAD
We map Oro's accounts, roles, pricebooks, and RFQ workflows to Shopify companies, catalogs, price lists, and Protocol modules, and identify what stays custom. See the Migration Roadmap →
2. Build — 8–12 weeks
Theme, native B2B, Protocol modules (approvals, spend control, quick order, portal), Quote Engine, and ERP middleware.
3. Data migration & QA
Accounts, contacts with roles, price lists, open quotes, and order history — plus the full redirect map before cutover.
4. Soft launch → full launch
Reps first, then accounts in waves, with adoption dashboards from day one.
We don't publish a dedicated OroCommerce migration guide yet. The closest existing playbook is our custom platform to Shopify Plus migration path — same problem shape: a stack you own, with logic that has no native equivalent until you map it.
