## TL;DR

OpenAI killed Instant Checkout the same day Shopify shipped Agentic Storefronts, which surface products inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot and send buyers to your own checkout. B2B-only catalogs are excluded, but a hybrid Shopify Plus store gets its D2C catalog included automatically while B2B pricing stays hidden.

Not because your products are worse. Because your platform can’t talk to AI agents.

This week two things happened on the same day that every B2B distributor needs to understand. And almost nobody is connecting the dots for you.

## What happened on March 24

OpenAI confirmed it’s killing Instant Checkout — the feature that was supposed to let people buy directly inside ChatGPT. It flopped hard. Out of millions of Shopify merchants, roughly 30 actually went live with it. Users researched products but didn’t buy. OpenAI hadn’t even built sales tax collection. Their blog post said the feature “did not offer the level of flexibility” they wanted.

Same day, **[Shopify](https://humanafterall.ca/insights/shopify-agentic-storefronts-chatgpt-b2b-distributors/)** announced a smarter approach. Instead of trying to own the checkout inside a chatbot, Shopify built Agentic Storefronts — a system that makes your products discoverable inside AI conversations and sends buyers to YOUR store to complete the purchase. Your checkout. Your brand. Your customer data.

This isn’t a pilot. Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowe’s, and Wayfair are already integrated on the OpenAI side. Walmart launched a full in-ChatGPT app with account linking, loyalty programs, and Walmart payments. Shopify’s merchant catalog is feeding product data into ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot simultaneously.

The D2C side of eCommerce is moving into AI conversations right now. It’s not a roadmap. It’s shipping.

## Here’s what nobody’s telling B2B distributors

Buried in Shopify’s documentation is a line that changes the math for every B2B company evaluating platforms:

**Agentic Storefronts support only direct-to-consumer sales. B2B-only products are automatically excluded.**

If your catalog sits behind password-protected pages or B2B-only price lists, AI agents can’t see you. You’re invisible in ChatGPT. Invisible in Gemini. Invisible in Copilot.

But there’s an exception that matters enormously.

**If you sell the same products to both B2B and D2C customers on a hybrid Shopify Plus store, your D2C catalog gets included automatically.** B2B pricing stays hidden. Your consumer-facing product data flows into every AI channel Shopify supports.

This is exactly what we build at [Human After All](https://humanafterall.ca/). Hybrid Shopify Plus stores where a manufacturer or distributor serves both wholesale buyers and end consumers from a single platform. The B2B side handles customer-specific pricing, net payment terms, company accounts, and catalog segmentation. The D2C side gets automatic visibility in every AI shopping surface that exists today.

A distributor running a dedicated B2B-only store — on any platform — gets none of this.

## The platform gap is real and it’s widening

I want to be specific because vague “digital transformation” talk helps nobody.

Shopify Plus has Agentic Storefronts live in production right now. Products flow into ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot out of the box. The infrastructure underneath is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) — an open standard Shopify co-developed with Google back in January, backed by Walmart, Target, Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe. Hybrid B2B/D2C is natively supported. Shopify Plus starts at $2,300/month with built-in B2B features.

Adobe Commerce committed to supporting UCP in a February blog post. No rollout schedule. Their exact language: “additional capabilities planned throughout 2026.” If you want agentic AI features on Adobe, you need a separate Adobe Experience Platform license that can double or triple your software cost. The first Magento UCP modules were built by an agency as open source — Adobe hasn’t shipped native support.

SAP Commerce Cloud announced a storefront MCP server at NRF in January, planned for Q2. Not live. SAP’s own words: “the first of many steps.”

Shopify is 6-12 months ahead on execution. That gap determines whether your products show up in AI shopping conversations this year or sometime next year. For a $50M–$500M distributor making a platform decision right now, this isn’t a footnote in the RFP. It should be a deciding factor.

## Why your product data is the real bottleneck

AI agents don’t browse websites. They parse structured data fields. If your product specs live in PDFs, your attributes are inconsistent across systems, and your descriptions were written for humans but are unreadable by machines — no platform can help you.

When I ran digital at a $30M medical equipment distributor, we invested in PIM governance and AI-powered data enrichment before any of this was on the radar. We structured every attribute, compatibility relationship, and technical spec into machine-readable fields. That delivered 52% sales growth.

Back then the payoff was better search and cleaner catalog management. Today, the same structured data is exactly what AI agents need to find and recommend your products. Same investment. Compounding returns.

> Merkle published research in early March predicting that 33% of B2B buyers will use agents to complete online transactions by 2030. When procurement teams start asking AI to compare suppliers and check availability, the distributors with clean, structured data will get recommended. Everyone else won’t exist in the conversation.

## What to do Monday morning

**Already on Shopify Plus with a hybrid store?** Check your Agentic Storefronts settings in the admin. Review Shopify Catalog Mapping. Your D2C products may already be visible in AI channels.

**Evaluating platforms?** Put agentic commerce readiness in your RFP. Ask your vendor specifically when your products will show up inside ChatGPT and Gemini. “Committed to supporting” is not the same as “live now.”

**Manufacturer selling both wholesale and retail?** The hybrid Shopify Plus model should be on your shortlist. It’s the only architecture today that gets B2B companies into AI shopping channels through their D2C catalog while keeping B2B pricing, catalogs, and company accounts separate.

**Stuck on a legacy platform with no migration budget yet?** Start with your product data. Structure your attributes. Clean your taxonomies. Make specs machine-readable. This work pays off regardless of platform, and when you do migrate, you won’t start from zero.

## The honest take

I’m not going to pretend agentic commerce is fully mature. OpenAI just proved the checkout part doesn’t work yet. Forrester’s latest data shows that completing a purchase inside an AI assistant is still the least-adopted use case even among regular users.

But the infrastructure being built — UCP, Shopify Catalog, structured data standards, protocol-level interoperability backed by Google, Visa, and Mastercard — that’s not hype. That’s plumbing. And when B2B agentic commerce arrives (every signal points to 18-24 months), the companies on the right platform with clean product data won’t need to scramble.

Everyone else will wonder why their buyers found a competitor first.

## Les questions qu'on me pose

FAQ

Why is my B2B catalog excluded?

Agentic Storefronts support direct-to-consumer sales only. Products sold exclusively to business or wholesale customers, or sitting behind password-protected price lists, are excluded automatically.

What is the workaround?

A hybrid store. If you sell the same products to both B2B and D2C customers on one Shopify Plus store, the D2C catalog flows into every AI channel while company-specific pricing stays private.

Is this live or a roadmap?

Live. Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowe's and Wayfair are already integrated on the OpenAI side, and Walmart shipped a full in-ChatGPT app.
